Deze lezing wordt gegeven in het kader van de Capita Selecta lezingenreeks georganiseerd door de Artesis Hogeschool ism. het VAi. Woensdag 20 maart om 20u00 in deSingel in Antwerpen.

The artist will talk about the conception and backgrounds of his broad and extensive art practice, which mainly consists of large scale, carefully composed fictive spaces inviting visitors to be carried away by unmistakably staged yet simultaneously authentic experiences.

What typifies Op de Beeck's work is its formal diversity, which ranges from drawings and paintings to monumental sculptures, installations and films. Digital media such as video and photography take a prominent place in his production as well. Throughout his research, the artist consciously utilises a visual language that combines the most diverse aesthetic forms into a highly personal discourse. He attempts, in this way, to express his understanding of our complex and problematic reality. Op de Beeck's often tragicomic images combine strong cultural and social-oriented reflections with a fascination for fiction, representation, and identity. The often dark hues, the conjuring images, the alienating perspective; every detail in the emotive work enhances the unmistakable melancholy that envelops it.

Hans Op de Beeck lives and works in Brussels. He exhibited throughout Europe, the United States, Latin America, Great Britain and in countries such as Japan, China, Singapore, Russia and Turkey. His list of institutional solo exhibitions includes Kunstverein Hannover, Hannover (D) (2012); the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington (US) (2011); the Galleria Borghese, Rome (IT) (2009) and GEM-Gemeentemuseum, The Hague (NL) (2004).
