Fotospecial: Barajas Airport

Richard Rogers heeft de 11e RIBA Stirling Prize 2006 gewonnen voor zijn nieuwe terminal van het Barajas Airport in Madrid (zie foto). Rogers was ook genomineerd voor zijn National Assembly for Wales in Cardiff. Er waren in totaal zes projecten genomineerd. De uitreiking vond op 14 oktober plaats tijdens een live televisie uitzending op Channel 4 vanuit The Roundhouse in Londen.

The building presents a straightforward linear diagram, in the form of a clear sequence of spectacular spaces for both departing and arriving passengers. The parallel linear floor planes are separated from each other by dramatic, light-filled canyons across which bridges span.

A restrained and functional approach is consistently applied to great effect, resulting in a visually clean, remarkably uncluttered and soothing environment.
